Virtue of patience
Needle felting is the most laborious way of making felt out of wool fibers. At the same time, this felting technique is the most precise one. It is just perfect for figurines, small woollen applications, detailed patterns and motives decorating felted accessories. There is nothing better than needle felting whenever one works on a detail and wants to control the wool down to the smallest fiber.
In this technique one uses a special felting needle or a set of felting needles mounted on a larger tool. Thanks to their barbed edges, felting needles hook fibers and push them deeper into the wool. As a result, fibers become entangled with each other and the shape of the item emerges gradually from the original chaos.
Obtaining the shape one wants to get can take hours or days depending on the item’s size and complexity. The process is very laborious and puts a lot of strain on the eyes and wrists. There is also a constant risk of a painful prick. To make the work easier and safer, one can use protecting gloves, baking molds for initial shaping, and special sponges or brushes preventing needles from hitting the table.
